Development Director

The Development Director (DD) is responsible for advancing the financial sustainability, visibility, and long-term growth of the Bozeman Film Society and Bozeman Film Festival (BFS/BFF). Working closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, the DD leads fundraising, sponsorships, donor stewardship, grant development, and strategic partnerships that support the organization's mission and programs.

The DD is a strategic relationship-builder who cultivates meaningful partnerships and develops innovative opportunities to connect patrons, donors, sponsors, foundations, businesses, and community stakeholders to the work of BFS/BFF. This position requires exceptional communication skills, strong organizational abilities, sound judgment, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic nonprofit environment.

This is a part-time employee position.

Position Goals

  • Increase and diversify contributed revenue (ticket sales, sponsorships, donations, grants, etc.)

  • Increase program revenue and/or attendance

  • Increase brand recognition

In partnership with the Executive Director, the DD will:

  • Create and implement BFS/BFF’s annual fundraising plan

  • Secure financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations

  • Secure financial and in-kind support from program sponsors

Core Responsibilities (70%) – Development & Fundraising

  • Develop and execute an annual fundraising strategy for donors and sponsors to meet established financial goals

  • Conduct research on prospective sponsors, corporate foundations, and individual donors

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for prospective sponsors, corporate foundations, and individual donors

  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with donors and maintain accurate donor records

  • Manage all aspects of sponsorships, including acquisition, value proposition development, proposals and contracts, tracking, fulfillment, and relationship building

  • Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising events, including the annual gala and year-end fundraising campaign

  • Research, write, submit, and manage grant applications and fulfillment requirements

  • Serve as a community liaison during the annual BFS sponsor and membership drive, including tracking sponsor/member communications, donations, and gift coupons within existing systems

Communications (10%)

  • Maintain the organization’s public communications, including newsletters and press releases, while ensuring adherence to branding guidelines

Administrative & Organizational (20%)

  • Create monthly reports for the Board of Directors and other reports as needed

  • Conduct research to stay informed about development best practices and industry trends

  • Track and report on advertising and fundraising budgets and maintain organized records

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director in support of the organization

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Degree in communications, marketing, nonprofit management, philanthropy, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, sponsorship development, grant writing, and revenue generation

  • Three to five years of experience in fundraising, sponsorship development, grant writing, nonprofit development, marketing, or a related field

  • Exceptional writing, editing, organizational, and project management skills

  • Strong planning, relationship-building, and organizational abilities

  • Proficiency with digital tools and software, particularly Google Workspace and Eventive; basic graphic design skills are a plus

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines

  • Passion for film, arts, and community building

  • Familiarity with the Bozeman community

Physical Requirements

Essential functions include the ability to sit or stand for extended periods and to move throughout indoor and outdoor environments, including festival venues and downtown event areas.

Schedule

This position is remote; however, applicants must reside in Gallatin, Madison, or Park County, Montana. One in-person meeting per week is required, along with attendance at a minimum of one in-person event per month.

This is a part-time, non-exempt employee position averaging approximately 10 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Occasional morning, evening, and weekend availability may be required, particularly during Festival and Society events.

Mileage and approved business-related travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with organizational policies.

Employment Status

The Development Director is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt employee of the Bozeman Film Society. The position reports directly to the Executive Director and works collaboratively with the Board of Directors, sponsors, donors, community partners, and volunteers to advance the organization's fundraising and development goals.

Compensation

$30 per hour, averaging approximately 10 hours per week.

Estimated Annual Earnings: Approximately $15,000, based on an average of 10 hours per week over 50 weeks.

Benefits

This position is not currently eligible for health insurance, retirement benefits, or paid leave.
